Investigators are looking for a man who broke into cars overnight Friday at the Riverwalk Townes community in Yorktown.

The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office took five reports Saturday of vehicles being rummaged through the previous night, according to Deputy First Class Sheriff Shawn Kekoa-Dearhart.

Kekoa-Dearhart said five people reported their vehicles had been tampered with overnight, and one said the person had stolen “an item of value.”

Investigators are not releasing a description of the stolen item because the incident is still under investigation, Kekoa-Dearhart said.

The other four residents who made police reports did not say anything was taken from their vehicles.

One victim told police they had locked their vehicle the night before, but the car showed no signs of forced entry, Kekoa-Dearhart said.

The other four could not recall whether they had locked their car doors or not, she added.

Images released by the sheriff’s office show a man with a baseball cap opening a car door.

Anyone who can identify the person in the photos, or who has information about the thefts should contact the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office at 757-890-4999 or the anonymous Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP. Reference case # 1704326.
