No way, Hurricane Jose: Storm ‘not likely’ to reach Hampton Roads

A screen grab from the National Hurricane Center of Hurricane Jose’s position on Wednesday morning. Forecasters said the hurricane is “not likely” to impact Hampton Roads.

As the country watched Hurricane Irma surge up the coast of Florida over the weekend, another hurricane was forming behind it.

As of Wednesday morning, forecasters at the National Weather Service said the hurricane is “not likely” to impact Hampton Roads or the Outer Banks.

“The current forecast would take it closer to Bermuda than to Virginia Beach,” said meteorologist Jon McGee on Wednesday morning. “At this point, there is minimal chance that Jose will impact the local area.”

Hurricane Jose, currently a Category 1 storm, was moving southeast at about 8 mph around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

McGee said that the likelihood of any coastal flooding, rain or high winds is low, though high rip current risks will remain a concern over the weekend and into next week.
