A 5-year-old James City County boy was pulled from Chickahominy Riverfront Park pool and transported to a hospital via helicopter after a near drowning incident Saturday afternoon, a fire official said.
The boy, whose name is not being released, was at the pool with family members, according to Battalion Chief Alton Catlett, a public information officer with James City County Fire Department.
At 1:33 p.m., the fire department received a 911 call reporting that lifeguards were performing CPR on a small child at the pool, Catlett said.
“So the lifeguards did an outstanding job,” Catlett said.
The boy’s uncle had spotted him submerged at the bottom of the pool. The uncle alerted lifeguards, who started CPR.
When JCC medics arrived, the child had a faint pulse; medics assisted him with breathing.
The boy was taken by helicopter to VCU Medical Center in Richmond, the closest facility with pediatric intensive care.
No other information is available at this time, including the names of the lifeguards or status of the child’s condition, according to Catlett.
