Update Dec. 28: VDOT has postponed the traffic shift for a second time, this time “due to forecasted weather conditions.” The shift is now expected to go into effect the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 4.
The week leading up to the new year will include lane closures and a shift in traffic patterns along a six-mile section of I-64 that runs from Water Country to Lee Hall in Newport News.
According to a news release from the Virginia Department of Transportation, the lane closures will begin Tuesday and are scheduled to end Friday, Dec. 30.
According to the release, there will be alternating single-lane closures on I-64 west between Route 199 (exit 242) and Yorktown Road/Lee Hall (exit 247) Tuesday through Thursday nights, starting as early as 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning.
Also beginning the week before the new year, westbound traffic on I-64 between Route 199 (exit 242) and Yorktown Road (exit 247) will be shifted over to newly reconstructed outside shoulder lanes.
According to VDOT spokesperson Brittany McBride, the traffic shift had originally been scheduled to begin Tuesday, but was rescheduled to begin the morning of Thursday, Dec. 29 and will remain in place for the duration of construction along that segment of I-64.
