Bruton High School evacuated due to ‘strong odor’

Students and staff at Bruton High School were evacuated Friday afternoon due to a strong odor, officials say.

According to a news release from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, which cited a message released by the school administration, the high school’s fire alarms were activated around 12:30 p.m. Friday after a “strong odor” was detected.

Personnel from the county division of Fire and Life Safety responded to the building and were able to determine that a fan motor overheated causing the odor, the release stated.

Students and staff were evacuated the building for a brief time, until authorities gave the go ahead for them to return to the school gymnasium, the release stated.

According Sandra Ford, Secretary to the Superintendent for the York County School Division, students and staff returned to their classrooms and instruction continued following the incident.
