Residents of York County whose homes or businesses were damaged by Hurricane Matthew may be receiving some federal compensation.
The Virginia Department of Emergency Management provided FEMA officials with more information Friday regarding Governor McAuliffe’s request for federal aid, according to a VDEM press release.
McAuliffe originally requested Individual Assistance aid and a federal disaster declaration for York County and four other localities affected by Hurricane Matthew on Oct. 20.
“The Commonwealth is still actively recovering from Hurricane Matthew, and Virginians in the Hampton Roads areas need more help to get back on their feet and back to their livelihoods,” VDEM State Coordinator Dr. Jeff Stern said. “We are working around the clock to foster and support this recovery and are asking the federal government for additional aid.”
Friday’s request contained information on damages reported by area homeowners associations. VDEM, FEMA, local governments and the Small Business Association jointly conducted Preliminary Damage Assessments in early October, soon after Hurricane Matthew.
Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) are currently open in the Hampton Roads area to assist York County and other affected residents. Residents have until Jan. 3 to apply for FEMA Individual Aid, and can do so by visiting disasterassistance.gov or by calling 800-621-3362 (711-Relay, Video Relay). TTY users may call 800-462-7585.
