The Williamsburg-James City County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens about a new phone scam.

Sheriff Bob Deeds stated Thursday that his office has received multiple calls from area residents, calling to confirm if they had missed a court date.

The callers reported receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be a deputy, who informed them that they had missed a court date and needed to pay a fine over the phone.

“I don’t know who it is or where they’re calling from, but it’s not us,” said Deeds.

Deeds says his office does not call residents regarding missed court dates. Instead, he says a judge will issue an Order to Show Cause, which the Sheriff’s office serves.

Deeds also says that he’s heard of the scam taking place elsewhere in Virginia, but this is the first he’s heard of the scam in Williamsburg or James City County. Deeds says he intends to look into the scam, but is not optimistic that the calls can be tracked.
