The Justice Department has moved to dismiss corruption charges against former Gov. Robert F. McDonnell and his wife Maureen McDonnell, according to a release.
“After carefully considering the Supreme Court’s recent decision and the principles of federal prosecution, we have made the decision not to pursue the case further,” the release said.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Alexandria did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Senate Majority Leader Thomas K. Norment, Jr. (R-James City) issued a statement in which he called the decision “extraordinarily good news for the McDonnell family and a relief to the people of Virginia.”
“It is my hope, and I firmly believe the hope of the overwhelming majority of Virginians, that the McDonnell family will rebuild their lives after this ordeal,” he said.
