After 37 years in education, 10 of which were spent in WJCC Schools, Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School Principal Phyllis Dorsey will retire, effective July 1.

Dorsey, who has been principal at Clara Byrd Baker for three years, said she felt it was time to “explore new opportunities.” She anticipates those new opportunities will have a connection to education.

She taught in West Virginia for several years before moving to Virginia, where she has worked as an elementary school teacher and reading specialist.

In 2006, she became an assistant principal at Clara Byrd Baker but left for two years to work in the same role at Stonehouse Elementary School.

Her return to Clara Byrd Baker was “like coming home,” she said.

“I love the people and the children and the families at Clara Byrd Baker and it was just a delight and a pleasure for me to work with them,” Dorsey said of her return. “It was an honor to come back to Clara Byrd Baker.”

Upon her retirement, she said it would be the students she would miss the most.

“I get my energy every day from their smiling faces and warm embraces,” Dorsey said. “I’ll miss the children the most.”
