Registrar: Recount in York Schools Race Would Not Begin Before Next Week

district 5 school board raceTabb residents will have to wait a while longer before they know who will represent them on the York County School Board, as a recount, if conducted, would not start before next week.

Walt Latham, the county voter registrar, said challenger Sean Myatt, who trails Dist. 5 incumbent Robbie George by one vote, would not be able to file a petition for a recount with the York-Poquoson Circuit Court until after election results are certified by the county electoral board.

Latham said results are typically certified the Friday after the election, as voters who cast provisional ballots have until Friday to verify their residence with a photo ID.

Until the results are certified, they are considered unofficial, Latham said.

“We’re kind of in a zone where there is nothing really to contest or petition or recount because there is nothing saying this person or that person has won or lost,” Latham said.

From there, Myatt has 10 days to file a petition with the circuit court. Latham said he did not know how long a recount would take, but said it would not take as long as the 2013 Virginia attorney general recount, which went on for two days before the petitioner called off the count.

“This is only involving two precincts. I think it would be fairly more quick than an attorney general race,” Latham said. “That’s going to be up to the board and the schedule they set.”

In an interview with WYDaily on election night, Myatt said he intends to file a petition for a recount as a gesture to his supporters.

The Virginia Department of Elections shows George holds the lead with 1,018 votes, while Myatt has 1,017 votes. District 5 has 8,297 registered voters.
