The City of Williamsburg has a new city manager.
The Williamsburg City Council appointed Marvin “Marc” Collins III as the city’s seventh city manager, replacing Jack Tuttle, who is retiring today. Collins’s appointment is effective Aug. 1.
Deputy City Manager Jodi Miller will serve as interim city manager until Collins assumes the role.
Collins currently serves as assistant city manager of Fort Myers, Fla., a position he has held since 2009. He previously served as assistant county manager, planning director and other staff roles in Burke County, N.C. and in city staff positions in Catawba and Orange counties in North Carolina.
Mayor Clyde Haulman said Collins’ resume stood out among 55 received by the city during the search process. Haulman said Collins would be a “terrific” addition to city government, and his knowledge of managing a tourism-based economy would be useful.
“He’s worked in North Carolina, and North Carolina has some characteristics similar to Virginia,” Haulman said. “I think he understands and appreciates the quality of city government in Williamsburg, sort of the innovative things Jack [Tuttle] has done, and I think what he plans to do is build off those.”
Haulman said the two-stage interview process went smoothly, and included input from council members and city staff.
“Marvin Collins is an incredibly knowledgeable professional, and comes with the highest recommendations,” Haulman said. “I think this is a decision all of council is comfortable with.”
Collins holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in public administration from Appalachian State University. He is also a member of the International City/County Management Association, an organization representing professionals working in local government management.
Collins said he was excited to relocate to the Williamsburg area.
“My family and I look forward to joining the Williamsburg community and adding to the unique sense of place and quality of life,” Collins said in a news release.
Collins will receive a salary of $145,000 as city manager, and a $15,000 reimbursement for relocation expenses, which includes temporary housing. His salary at Fort Myers was $91,978.
