A James City County woman who has worked in the local clerk’s office for 22 years is looking to further serve the community as the Williamsburg and James City County’s Circuit Court Clerk.

Mona Foley, a Republican who currently serves as the office’s chief deputy clerk, announced her candidacy for the position Monday.

The position is currently occupied by Circuit Court Clerk Betsy B. Woolridge, who is retiring in November after 15 years in office.

Foley said she wants to continue expanding productivity through technology in the office and maintaining customer service and accountability.

Previous to her position as chief deputy clerk, Foley gained experience in the clerk’s office as deputy clerk, chancery clerk, law clerk substitute, probate clerk and working with criminal fines and costs.

The Circuit Court clerk’s duties involve performing administrative matters such as recording land records and plats, processing notary public applications, issuing marriage licenses, probating wills and recording military discharge forms.

If another Republican challenges Foley, a primary will be held June 9. Otherwise, Foley will go up against any Democratic contender Nov. 3.
