Craft brewing fans in the Historic Triangle have a new option for buying specialty beers.
The Hair of the DoG Bottle Shop opened Feb. 24 at 401A Duke of Gloucester St., located behind the DoG Street Pub.
The space was previously occupied by Everything Williamsburg, which moved to a different Merchants Square storefront in 2014.
Owned by DoG Street Pub proprietor Dave Everett and connected to the pub, the bottle shop features a variety of craft beers from throughout Virginia and around the country, many of which are also available on the pub’s drink menu.
The store also offers a range of other merchandise for purchase, including specialty sodas, beer-related tools, bottle openers, growlers, T-shirts, hats and specialty foods.
DoG Street Pub General Manager Michael Claar said the response to the soft opening had been growing as word spread.
“We’ve had lots of positive feedback,” he said. “Lots of people have been surprised at how much we have.”
To celebrate the opening, the store partnered with York County-based Alewerks Brewing Company to brew a specialty beer, available only at the store, DoG Street Pub and the Alewerks tasting room.
Claar said the store will eventually offer an interactive experience for patrons, including beer schools, tastings and food and drink pairing events.
While that programming is still in the planning stage, the bottle shop does have events planned in the coming weeks. The store will host a beer tasting with Roseland-based Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company on March 13, and a “tap takeover” event with Evolution Craft Brewing on March 27.
The bottle shop is also partnering with the Kimball Theatre to present a screening of the film, From Grain to Growler, a documentary on the history of Virginia’s craft brewing industry, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Claar. The screening is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. March 20. Tickets are $10.
