
Applications are currently being accepted for citizens wishing to learn about law enforcement in York County and the city of Poquoson.
The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office is once again holding the Sheriff’s Citizen Academy, which offers 12 three-hour classes that cover topics such as 911 communications, hiring and training, policies and procedures, criminal investigations, criminal law, DUI investigations, family violence and narcotics enforcement.
The classes will be taught by certified law enforcement instructors, supervisors and guest speakers.
Students will also be required to ride with a YPSO deputy for at least four hours.
The classes are free and open to York County and Poquoson residents who are at least 18 years old and have successfully passed a background investigation.
The program will begin March 23, and classes will be held mainly on Monday evenings from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. through June 8.
Citizens applying are asked to commit to attending at least 10 of the 12 scheduled classes. Upon completion, citizens will receive a certificate of graduation.
