A Republican candidate has placed her name in the running for the District 1 seat on the York County Board of Supervisors.
Rebekah Sandridge, a real estate agent with Century 21 in Williamsburg, said she wants to change the faces of leadership on the board.
“We need real leadership: Leadership that will fight for our property owners, entrepreneurs, and veterans,” she said in a news release announcing her candidacy Wednesday.
Sandridge said she wants to fight for the freedoms of York County residents.
“York County is where our hard-fought freedoms were won,” she said. “Yet today, York County suffers from leadership that is more interested in micromanaging our lives rather than protecting and building upon our founding legacy or encouraging those seeking to build a better life.”
District 1, which encompasses Magruder and Waller Mill, is currently represented by Republican Supervisor Walt Zaremba, who has not announced whether he will run for a sixth term.
Sandridge said she wants to focus on what she calls “excessive regulations” in the York County Code.
“These excessive regulations dictate the way we build our homes, educate our children, police our communities, and support our families,” she said. “And these excessive regulations are costing us in more ways than we can imagine.”
She is also concerned with the gap in welfare for military veterans and said she wants to explore ways to close the gap and “ensure our veterans have the care they deserve.”
Sandridge, a mother of four, graduated from William Penn Senior High School in York, Penn., and holds an associate degree from Rappahannock Community College.
If Zaremba or another Republican announces his or her candidacy, a primary for the district will be held June 9. If Sandridge runs unopposed in the party, her name will appear on the ballot Nov. 3.
