A two-vehicle accident in James City County shut down Interstate 64 West for about an hour Friday as crews worked to extract a woman from one of the cars involved in the crash.
Bill Apperson, a spokesperson with the James City Bruton Volunteer Fire Department, said units from York County and James City County responded to a call at mile marker 226 near Barnes Road at around 12:30 p.m. to find two cars had crashed in the woods off the interstate.
Emergency personnel spent about 30 minutes cutting the roof off a Hyundai and freeing a 25-year-old woman who was trapped in the car and suffering from injuries.
She was flown by helicopter to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center for a broken leg and internal injuries, authorities said.
The other person involved in the crash, a 30-year-old woman driving a small black sport utility vehicle, was taken to the same hospital via ambulance for non-life threatening injuries, Apperson said.
Both lanes of I-64 West reopened at around 1:30 p.m.
Authorities have not released the cause of the accident at this time.
