A project to overhaul Jamestown Beach Park with several new amenities will shutter the park until the middle of May.
Crews will build a second park entrance, add a launch area for paddle craft, add additional parking, build a trail that complies with requirements in the Americans with Disabilities Act, add an observation pier and construct a building with restrooms and an area for concession sales.
The project aims to stabilize and expand the beachfront, relieve traffic problems near the checkpoint for the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry and meet parking demands for parkgoers, according to a news release from James City County.
The $690,632 project will be carried out by David A. Nice Builders Inc. It will be funded by county capital funds — which are dollars allocated for infrastructure and equipment purchases — and grant funding from land and water conservation grants.
Jamestown Beach Park, located at 2205 Jamestown Road, is set near the Jamestown Settlement and the entryway to the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry. It features beaches, charcoal grills and open space for recreation.
