Several people were bit by a dog in James City County on Sunday, leading health officials to ask the public for help in finding the now-missing dog.
The dog is described by the Peninsula Health District as a black pit or lab mix. A news release states the dog bit people in the area of Selby Lane off Government Road.
If the dog is not found, those bitten will have to undergo shots for the prevention of rabies.
If the dog is found, it will be placed in a 10-day, in-home confinement and observed. The dog will not be taken away from its owner.
Anyone who has seen an animal that fits the description in James City County is asked to call the Peninsula Health District Williamsburg Area Environmental Health Office at 757-603-4277.
Citizens are asked to call James City County Animal Control after hours at 757-253-1800 if they have information regarding the dog.
Residents are reminded to report all exposures, enjoy wildlife from a distance, and make sure their family pets are vaccinated and protected against the rabies virus.
Virginia state law requires dogs and cats be vaccinated between three and four months of age and thereafter to maintain protection against rabies.
