A man accused of beating a man with a gun has waived his preliminary hearing on four felony charges.
Maurice Dominique Cutler, a 31-year-old Toano man, is suspected of meeting a man for a drug deal and pulling a gun on him.
“It appears that this was a drug deal gone bad,” Lt. Dennis Ivey with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office said after Cutler’s arrest.
Cutler and the man met in the 500 block of Harrop Lane in Upper York County at around 12:50 p.m. Sept. 20, authorities said.
Ivey said Cutler and the man, who was carrying a backpack, got into a gray Jeep Cherokee and began driving down the street when Cutler pulled out a gun and demanded money.
The two men started fighting, and Cutler began hitting the man in the head with the gun while trying to pull off the backpack the man was wearing.
During the scuffle, the gun went off, Ivey said. No one was injured from the gunshot, but the victim was treated for cuts and abrasions on the side of his head at Riverside Doctors’ Hospital.
Cutler, who was charged with attempted robbery, malicious assault, using a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, will now face a grand jury, who will decide if there is enough evidence to bring the case to trial.
