Two teenagers have been arrested after authorities say they broke into a York County home and stole a safe containing valuables.

York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office deputies were waiting for Melvin R. Jones, 19, and a 15-year-old boy — whose name cannot be released due to his age — to come back from vacation before charging them with grand larceny, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, breaking and entering with the intent to commit a felony and conspiring to breaking and entering.

Authorities say the two broke into a home in the 200 block of Windsong Lane in the Four Seasons neighborhood of York County off Hampton Highway Dec. 18 and stole a safe containing more than $1,000 of jewelry along with a PlayStation game system.

Lt. Dennis Ivey with YPSO said the suspects were seen by a neighbor dragging the safe out of the house. Investigators located the unopened safe near the residence.

Ivey said the home showed no signs of forced entry.

Jones — who is from Yorktown — and the 15-year-old boy returned from vacation and came to the Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 6 for questioning, Ivey said. They were arrested later that day.

Jones is scheduled to appear in court at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
