The director at the helm of Bacon Street for nearly all of its time serving local youth with substance abuse and mental health issues will be leaving his position next year.

William “Sandy” Fagan is stepping down as executive director to pursue other opportunities, the center announced Friday.

For more than 40 years, Fagan has served at the nonprofit, which was started in 1971 by a group of citizens to help young people through counseling, education, referrals and prevention services. The center includes families in the treatment process, and is licensed and certified as an outpatient substance abuse center by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health.

“Sandy Fagan has served our agency and the Peninsula community with professionalism and distinction throughout his long and storied career,” said Bacon Street Board President Jerry Moore in a news release.

“Filling his shoes will be difficult, but the Board of Directors is committed to finding a replacement who can work with the board to create and execute a long term vision for Bacon Street that insures its ability to expand its health care services, both prevention and treatment, to Williamsburg and Peninsula families in need,” Moore said.

The search for a new executive director will start immediately, with Fagan’s last day set for late February.
