4521 John Tyler Highway, Williamsburg, VA 23185

The McDonald’s restaurant at 4521 John Tyler Hwy suffered minor smoke damage Wednesday morning due to a malfunctioning cooking grill, James City County Emergency officials report.
James City County Fire units arrived at the fast food restaurant around 6:40 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a 911 call from a McDonald’s employee to find the smoke inside the business and a small fire around a cooking appliance, Assistant Fire Chief Miles Pettengell said in a news release.
The two employees at the restaurant when the fire broke out evacuated the building when emergency responders arrived, Pettengell said. There were no customers at the time of the fire.
The fire was contained by the restaurant’s automatic fire suppression system, and fire personnel were able to fully extinguish the fire at 6:46 a.m.
Pettengell said the building suffered about $25,000 in smoke damage. The restaurant will remain closed until it passes an inspection by the Virginia Department of Health.
Units stayed on the scene until 7:36 a.m. to check for additional fire damage, Pettengell said.
There were no firefighter or civilian injuries.
