A 31-year-old man received a suspended sentence Friday after being arrested for looking into a college student’s apartment.
Burton Codey Rogers was arrested July 29 after police say he spent almost every day during the week of July 21 peeping into an apartment located at City Green Condominiums on Richmond Road.
Police responded to the apartment — where female students from the College of William and Mary live — around 11 a.m. July 21. They found chairs under the window of the apartment, arranged in a way that would allow someone to stand on them and look through the window, according to Maj. Greg Riley of the Williamsburg Police Department.
A week later, police received photographs of the suspect. Police waited by the apartment that day, and a man matching the suspect in the photographs returned to the area, Riley said.
Police arrested Rogers and charged him with seven misdemeanors of peeping into an occupied dwelling.
Four of the misdemeanors were dropped at Rogers’ hearing Friday. Defense attorney Tom Turbeville said Rogers began going to therapy “immediately after the event came to light” at Peninsula Therapy Center.
Rogers received a sentence of three years — one year for each misdemeanor — with all of the time suspended.
As part of his sentence, Rogers is barred from City Green Condominiums and the College of William and Mary.
