The James City County Police Department was recently awarded first place for its traffic safety program by the 2014 Virginia Law Enforcement Challenge.
The department was awarded in the “municipal police department with 76 to 125 officers” category. Judges based their decisions on six areas that comprise a comprehensive traffic safety program: problem identification, policies, planning, training of officers, public information and education, enforcement and an evaluation of the outcomes of the agency’s efforts.
The awards are based on entries that highlight agencies’ traffic safety education and enforcement activities in the past year. The awards luncheon took place during the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police’s 89th Annual Training Conference.
The department received first place in the 2012 National Law Enforcement Challenge, winning the overall challenge and the category for localities between 76 and 125 officers.
It was also awarded the Commonwealth Award, which is awarded to the law enforcement organization that has the best traffic safety programs in Virginia.
The law agency’s traffic safety programs include DUI Awareness, Traffic Complaint Enforcement and Simulated Impaired Driving Experience, according to its website.
