The National Hurricane Center has announced Arthur has reached hurricane status.

The storm is currently about 70 miles southwest of Cape Fear with sustained winds of 90 mph and is traveling northeast. The brunt of the storm is projected to hit northern North Carolina tonight and Friday while missing the Historic Triangle, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Arthur will strike North Carolina in full force tonight before heading out to sea. While the storm is currently a category one hurricane, it is expected to be category two by the time it reaches the North Carolina coast.

The Historic Triangle is forecast to receive about an inch of rain between Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon. By Friday night, conditions will be mostly clear.

The Virginia Department of Transportation announced Thursday crews are in place to clean storm water drain systems. Response gear, generators and other equipment have also been inspected.
