The James City County Planning Commission Policy Committee will gather this week for another meeting to discuss backyard chicken keeping.
The committee is scheduled to meet at 3 p.m. Thursday to resume discussion of a change in county regulations to allow backyard chicken keeping in a wider area of the county. Currently chickens are allowed in two residential districts and an agricultural district, which cover about 49 percent of the county.
When the committee met in February it asked staff to draft an ordinance that would allow chickens in one additional residential area. The committee did not indicate it would support chickens in additional areas, but wanted to see what a new ordinance would look like to have something to vote on.
In addition to a discussion about chickens, the committee will also discuss changes to the county’s regulations on accessory apartments and will hear an update on the Longhill Road Corridor Study and the Agricultural and Forestry Industries Grant.
The committee will meet in Building D at 101 Mounds Bay Road. Meetings are open to the public, and the full agenda is available online.
