Heath Richardson has been unanimously appointed to fill the Stonehouse District seat on the James City County Planning Commission until Jan. 31, 2015.
Supervisor Jim Kennedy (Stonehouse) nominated Richardson for the seat at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors work session; the nomination was supported by a 5-0 vote from the board.
The seat was vacated earlier this month when Commissioner Rich Krapf was appointed to fill the Powhatan seat. Redistricting drew Krapf out of the Stonehouse District.
Richardson’s was one of four applications the county received by the end of last week.
Richardson said he was thrilled to be appointed to serve the community. He said he has long been interested in municipal government and has studied zoning, economic development, green space and the Comprehensive Plan to gain a better understanding of the community.
“I came to realize that how we weigh the impact and quality of growth on an item-by-item basis requires a diverse group asking the right questions on behalf of the County’s citizens,” Richardson wrote in emailed statement.
Richardson, an engineer with Alion Science and Technology, has served as president of the Wellington Estates Homeowner’s Association since September 2012.
“I’ve had the opportunity to work with County staff on numerous occasions as a representative of my neighbors on the HOA, and have always found these interactions positive and productive,” Richardson wrote.
Richardson, along with his wife and three sons, has been a James City County resident since 2005. He said he hopes “to call James City County home for many years.”
Joining Richardson as another new member on the Planning Commission is John Wright III, who was appointed to fill an at-large seat earlier this month. Wright was not available for comment Tuesday.
