Sewer work will close lanes on John Tyler Highway starting Tuesday.
The James City Service Authority will be replacing a sewer manhole at the intersection of John Tyler Highway and John Rolfe Lane, which will result in lane closures on John Tyler Highway.
The manhole is about 30 to 35 years old, JCSA General Manager Larry Foster said.
“Over time, the manhole has just deteriorated … to where it’s structurally subject to failing,” Foster said, explaining JCSA wants to replace the manhole before it fails because it is located in the roadway. “We hope that our driving public will have patience.”
The cost to replace this manhole will be about $30,000. Typically, JCSA rehabilitates manholes — about 20 to 40 per year — rather than replacing them, but this manhole is in worse condition and structurally unsound. The replacement also requires traffic to be rerouted around the construction area for a longer period of time. A manhole rehabilitation project can cost about $4,000 to $5,000 and can last about 4 to 8 hours.
Closures are expected to occur from about 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday, depending on the weather.
