York Notebook: Library Looking for Trustee; Voter Registration Deadline

yorknotebook2The first full week of fall is behind us. Elections are drawing near, so make sure you’ve registered to vote! If you’re interested in participating in the political process at the local government level, consider applying for the new seat on the Williamsburg Regional Library’s Board of Trustees. Read on for details.

Applications Now Being Accepted for Library Board of Trustees

The York County Board of Supervisors recently approved a contract with the Williamsburg Regional Library with the aim of allowing upper county citizens access to library services — the contract stipulates a York County member on the Board of Trustees.

The job requires two to three hours per month to prepare for and hold meetings. Responsibilities include hiring the library’s director, evaluating the performance on an annual basis, reviewing and approving a budget for operations, overseeing expenditures of library money and establishing library policies.

Anyone interested in applying for the job should visit the County Administrator’s Office at 224 Ballard St. or click here.

Oct. 15 is the Last Day to Register to Vote

The last day to register to vote in November’s election is Oct. 15. The York County ballot for the Nov. 5 election includes governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and a member of the Virginia House of Delegates.

In order to vote, Virginia law requires citizens to register in the precinct in which they live. Qualified residents are those who will be 18 years old on or before Nov. 5.

The deadline to update registration information is also Oct. 15. To change an address, complete sign and submit a voter registration application or vote card. If a citizen’s address has changed, they should update their address to ensure he or she remains qualified to vote.

The following places in the county will accept registrations or updates:

  • Voter Registrar’s Office at the County Administration Building, 224 Ballard St. in Yorktown
  • Tabb Library, 100 Long Green Blvd.
  • Yorktown Library, 8500 George Washington Memorial Highway (Route 17)
  • Griffen-Yeates Center, 1490 Government Road in Upper York County

Absentee voting has already begun. For those who will be out of town or cannot visit their polling place due to illness or disability should submit their absentee ballot by mail, email or fax by 5 p.m. Oct. 29.

For more information on the election, call the Registrar’s Office at 890-3440.
