Greenfield Senior Living – an assisted living company that has locations in Virginia, Pennsylvania and Tennessee – just opened a new location in a Williamsburg building that used to house the Madison Retirement Center.
The Madison shut down in February after the last of its residents moved because of an impending closure after the revocation of its license. Madison’s license was revoked after state inspectors found a number of violations in the center and the death of a resident because, according to the Virginia Social Services website, the retirement center “failed to provide supervision, care and attention to the specialized needs of a resident.”
Tuesday was a brighter day for the facility as, among other public officials, Vice Mayor Paul Freiling and Virginia Del. Mike Watson (R-93rd District) attended the ribbon cutting of the newly renovated building that has new management under Greenfield.
Greenfield bought the building, located at 251 Patriot Lane, back in May after management decided to open its ninth Virginia location in Williamsburg. Neal Clarke, executive director of the site, said Greenfield renovation crews had been working hard to upgrade the building since that time.
“They’ve been working non-stop, seven days a week for as long as I’ve been involved,” Clarke said.
About the only original pieces of the exterior standing, Clarke said, are the bricks. It has new HVAC, new windows and a new roof, as well as new interior furnishings.
The building also has a few things still under construction, but Clarke said they’re “mostly cosmetic” — a few gutters and re-striping the parking lot. More functional than cosmetic, construction continues to put up a patch of fence in the courtyard for memory care patients.
Greenfield Senior Living in Williamsburg already has its first 10 residents and is officially open and seeking more.
