W&M Tops U.S. News Chart for ‘Commitment to Undergraduate Teaching’

william and maryThe College of William & Mary tops the “U.S. News & World Report” chart of public colleges with a “strong commitment to undergraduate teaching.”

In addition to topping the chart for most committed public college overall, William & Mary tied for third place out of public and private institutions, following behind Dartmouth College and Princeton University.

“While these rankings never capture the true excellence of William & Mary, it’s always satisfying to see them move in a positive direction, as they did this time around,” said President Taylor Reveley in a release. “It remains amazing that William & Mary achieves such an extraordinary high level of quality with such a modest set of financial resources, as these ranking[s] make clear.”

Out of all public and private universities, William & Mary was ranked 32nd after moving up one position from its previous ranking. It was also ranked sixth best of the public institutions.

High school counselors ranked William & Mary well, as they had in the past. The school is tied with eight schools for 21st place, and last year was tied for 22nd place. William & Mary was highlighted as the most efficient in the country.

Under financial resources, William & Mary fell from last year’s place at 112 to 114 this year; William & Mary’s alumni giving rank moved up four places to 29th over last year’s 33rd place.

Today’s “U.S. News” report comes after several rankings highlighting William & Mary’s performance. The school was ranked 36th out of national universities by “Washington Monthly” in August. Data from the National Science Foundation indicates William & Mary has the highest percentage of nationwide schools who went on to earn doctorates, which is one of the factors “Washington Monthly” uses to analyze schools.

Starting early in 2013, the “Princeton Review” ranked William & Mary the fourth “best value” institution in the country.

“U.S. News” released graduate school rankings in March, putting the William & Mary School of Education at 32nd in the nation, 11 spots higher than the previous ranking. The Law School moved up two spots to 33rd and the Mason School of Business was ranked 70th. Moving up one spot from 2010, the doctoral program in U.S. colonial history was ranked third.

Forbes magazine ranked William & Mary 44th overall and sixth among public institutions — excluding military academies — on the magazine’s annual report “Americas Top Colleges” in July.

Virginia’s higher education system is one of the best in the nation and the world. I congratulate the University of Virginia and the College of William & Mary for once again proving to be leaders among our nation’s public non-service academy colleges,” said Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) in response to the Forbes report.
