Construction is underway on the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, as the basement of the new museum begins to take shape.

U.S. Sen. Mark Warner (D) visited Yorktown on Thursday afternoon to take a hard-hat tour of the construction area for the new museum, as well as tour the existing Yorktown Victory Center and re-created Continental Army encampment.

Construction crews have been working toward a late 2016 completion, but the new museum building is expected to be completed by late next year. Once completed, the grand corridor that includes a timeline of the Revolutionary War, lobby, gift shop and classroom space will be transferred to the new building.

Following the transfer of some aspects of the museum, the exhibits will close for transfer. Once the existing Yorktown Victory Center is emptied, it will be demolished — an effort expected to take about three months — to make way for the re-created 1780s farm. The re-created Continental Army encampment will replace the existing farm.

An event lawn, where the existing gift shop and ticketing office are, will offer the opportunity for Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Board of Trustees events, outdoor educational opportunities and site rentals for public events, such as weddings.

Once completed, the new museum will be about 80,000 square feet with about 22,000 square feet of exhibition space — up from the existing 50,000-square-foot building with about 14,000 square feet of exhibition space. Also, the new building will feature a rectangular exhibition space, whereas the existing museum has a weaving gallery with a number of hallways.
