Hampton Roads Academy opened a new wing to its building Friday.
The expansion is the result of a $5.4 million fundraising effort through 300 donors.
The addition is 19,200 square feet and home to seven new classrooms and five science labs. It also has a new commons area, new admissions office, new receptions desk, an Early Childhood Learning wing and, according to Chair of the Board of Trustees Wendy Drucker, many other projects throughout the school.
“We renovated, to some degree, nearly every classroom at Hampton Roads Academy,” said Wendy Drucker, chair of the board of trustees.
The new wing contains a high-tech projection system, podcasting equipment and a Mac computer lab with 60 new computers. All those computers and new equipment also require 2.5 miles of cable.
“The new academic wing and all the ancillary benefits that can be seen in almost every corner of our campus are ‘tools’ that will enable our faculty to be the best,” said Peter W. Mertz, HRA’s Headmaster. “We are putting great tools in the hands of great faculty.”
