Erosion near the College Creek Bridge and Mill Creek and a section of land along the Colonial Parkway near College Creek will soon be repaired after damage from Hurricane Irene in 2011.
About 440 cubic yards of rip rap, rock material used to stabilize shorelines, will be placed at the northeastern abutment of the bridge to prevent future erosion. Six bridge abutments will be repaired: two abutments each on the College Creek Bridge, Mill Creek Bridge and the isthmus bridge from Powhatan Creek to Jamestown Island.
About 2,137 square feet of rip rap and water-permeable fabric will be used to protect the western portion of shoreline along College Creek, which suffered substantial erosion from Hurricane Irene.
The existing eastern portion of shoreline is now stabilized to some extent with rip rap.
Placing the rip rap over the shoreline will affect about 165 square feet of wetlands without any plant life. The slopes will be reworked to accommodate the added materials, with minimal clearing and grading.
No contract has been awarded to start repairs, but the Federal Highway Administration anticipates work to start this summer and be completed before next year, said Doug Hecox, a FHA public affairs specialist. Because no contract has been awarded, the FHA is not announcing a cost estimate for the project.
