Five Historic Triangle elementary schools were recognized by Gov. Bob McDonnell for advanced learning and achievement Wednesday.
WJCC’s Matoaka, Matthew Whaley and Rawls Byrd elementary schools and York County’s Coventry and Mount Vernon elementary schools were among 151 earning 2013 Virginia Index of Performance awards. The incentive program recognizes schools and divisions that exceed minimum state and federal accountability standards and achieve excellence goals established by the governor and the board.
Matoaka was one of 51 schools to earn the Board of Education Excellence Award, signifying the school met all state and federal accountability benchmarks for at least two consecutive years. Excellence Award-winners also made progress toward goals for increased student achievement and expanded educational opportunities set by the board.
Matthew Whaley and Rawls Byrd, along with Coventry and Mount Vernon, were included among 98 schools that received Distinguished Achievement Awards. They met all state and federal benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and made progress toward the goals of the governors and the board.
