A few people gathered on the steps of the Williamsburg-James City County Courthouse on a blustery, wet Wednesday for an auction of the New Town building that was once home to Green Leafe Café.

The only bidder was a representative of Union First Market Bank, who submitted the winning bid of $1,210,878.54. The bank now has 30 days to settle the sale with the trustees who are currently in possession of the building.

The winning bid bought the bank two condominium units and all of the improvements and fixtures currently in place.

The Green Leafe Café’s New Town location closed in December almost five years after it opened. Owner Glenn Gormley said the closure, which put 35 to 40 people out of work, was the result of New Town not living up to its potential, the recession and some bad business decisions.

At the time of the closure, Gormley said he wanted to sell the building to another restaurant, though it appears that task will fall to Union First Market Bank.

The Green Leafe Café in Williamsburg and the Green Leafe’s catering business remain open.
