Crews from the Virginia Department of Transportation will be working throughout the week to repair potholes on I-64 East from the James City County/New Kent Line to the James City County/Newport News city line.
That means you can expect crews to be working in the Historic Triangle from around mile marker 224 — a few miles west of the exit for Route 30 that leads to Anderson’s Corner — down to around mile marker 246, which is a mile from the Lee Hall exit in Newport News. Work will also be underway on I-64 in Newport News, according to a news release from VDOT.
Drivers can expect mobile and alternating lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. in that stretch as crews work to patch potholes on the road.
Pothole repair season is typically in March, said Jennifer Gwaltney, a VDOT spokesperson. The exact time when the repairs are done varies depending on weather conditions. VDOT identified this week as the right time to conduct these repairs, which Gwaltney said are routine. All pothole repairs on the road will be done with a hot-asphalt mix.
The VDOT Hampton Roads Office has been working to repair potholes throughout the area after a rapid opening of the pesky holes on I-64 and I-264 early in the month. That damage was concentrated in areas outside of the Historic Triangle.
The administrator of that office, Dennis Heuer, resigned from his position last week amid speculation that his office did not provide adequate oversight to TME Industries, a contractor that had been tasked to repair potholes in Hampton Roads.
The contractor carrying out the repairs on I-64 East in the Historic Triangle is the Infrastructure Corporation of America. That company has been maintaining I-64 from Richmond to Norfolk since 2005, according to its website.
