JCC Notebook: Supes to Hold Public Hearing, Household Chemical Collection Today and More

The James City County Board of Supervisors will meet Tuesday to discuss a few grant and contract awards and will hold a public hearing. Household chemical collection is taking place today. The James City County Planning Commission Policy Committee has announced the date of its next meeting. A bluebird discussion and tour at Freedom Park is coming up, and James City County Parks and Recreation has released the February schedule of activities. Read on for more.

JCC Board of Supervisors Meeting Preview

The James City County Board of Supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the board room of Building F of the James City County Government Complex at 101 Mounts Bay Road.

On the consent calendar for the upcoming meeting are two contract awards and two grant awards:

  • A contract award for almost $1.3 million for replacement fire pumpers
  • A contract award for $221,962 for a replacement ambulance
  • A grant award to the Commonwealth Attorney of $37,981 from the Virginia Domestic Violence Victim Fund through the State Department of Criminal Justice Services. The grant will fund personnel costs and travel expenses to assist in the prosecution of cases involving domestic violence and abuse.
  • A grant award to the county’s Purchase of Development Rights Program of $160,715 from the Office of Farmland Preservation, Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The grant funds can be used toward the purchase of agricultural conservation easements.

The board will hold a public hearing will be held on rezoning land to public lands and granting a special-use permit to James City County Parks and Recreation for the Jamestown Beach project, a part of the larger Save Our Shores project.

At the meeting, the board will also hear a quarterly update from the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Household Chemical Collection Today

The first household chemical, computer and electronics recycling collection of the year is from 8 a.m. until noon today at Lafayette High School, 4460 Longhill Road.

Items accepted for recycling are:

  • Household maintenance products: latex and oil-based paints, automotive products, lawn and garden products and household cleaning products.
  • Computer equipment: central processing units, keyboards, mice, laptop computers, manuals, miscellaneous items, monitors, printers and scanners
  • Electronic devices: cameras, portable radios, palm pilots, video games and consoles, stereo equipment, DVD players and VCRs, iPods or MP3 players and battery back-ups
  • Fluorescent and CFL light bulbs
  • Rechargeable batteries

TVs are not accepted at this collection.

Planning Commission Policy Committee Meeting Scheduled

The next meeting of the Planning Commission Policy Committee will take place at 2 p.m. Friday in Building A of the James City County Government Center at 101 Mounts Bay Road.

The committee will discuss pawnshops, landscape ordinance amendments and dates for future meetings.

Bluebirds in Our Gardens at Freedom Park

Shirley Devan, a certified Virginia Master Naturalist and Williamsburg Bird Club president will lead a workshop about bluebirds at 10 a.m. Feb. 16 at the Freedom park Interpretive Center. She will talk about habitats from season to season and how local groups monitor bluebirds. She will lead a walk around the area to look for bluebirds and to see nesting boxes.
