Lists Yule Love: Holiday Sporting Events

If you feel the need to feed your competitive edge over the holidays, or maybe want to drop the kids off at soccer camp and go shop with the girlfriends, then this list is for you.

Below we’ve compiled a list of a few athletic events going on in or around the Historic Triangle over the next few weeks, from high school basketball tournaments to community races open to the public and holiday deals to go watch the CAA-leading William and Mary Tribe mens basketball team.

 

Tribe Basketball Holiday Special

Fans are encouraged to bring friends and family to William and Mary’s Kaplan Arena this Friday, December 21st, to celebrate the holiday season with the Tribe’s men’s basketball team as they take on 8-1 Salisbury in the Green and Gold’s final contest before Christmas.

The Tribe is off to a 6-3 start and currently sits atop the CAA standings thanks to a 71-62 victory over Old Dominion on Dec. 1.

As part of their ‘Tribe Basketball Holiday Special,’ William and Mary Athletics will offer $5 ticket deals for fans.  Along with the ticket deal, Santa Claus will be in attendance to greet fans and hand out candy canes during the Tribe’s contest against the visiting Sea Gulls. HIGH SCHOOL TOURNAMENTS

Mike Duman ‘Toys for Tots’ Holiday Wrestling Invitational

Held at Nansemond River High School, Warhill, Tabb and Poquoson’s wrestling teams will compete along with roughly 10 other schools on Friday, December 21 and Saturday, December 22. Action begins at 1 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday.

 

WCA Girl to Participate in Prestigious Ronald Curry/Boo Williams

Williamsburg Christian Academy’s state-champion girls basketball teams will participate in the prestigious Ronald Curry/Boo Williams against some of the top Group AA and AAA programs in the state. The lady Eagles will compete in Bracket B with games Thursday, December 27th- Saturday, December 29th at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton. Find the complete bracket below.

Brunswick Boys Basketball Holiday Christmas Tournament

Annually features some of the top high school boys basketball program in the state. Grafton, the reigning Group AA runner-ups, will travel to face three-time state champion Brunswick and North Carolina powerhouse Rocky Mount Prep. The tournament will be held on site at Brunswick High Thursday, December 27- Saturday, December 29 with games held from 4- 8:30 p.m. each day. The Clippers tip off against Rocky Mountain Prep at 7 p.m. Thursday, and will play at either 5:30 or 8:30 p.m. Friday depending on the outcome.

 

Colin E. Baker Elite Wrestling Invitational

Grafton High’s wrestling team and several other squads from around the area will compete in the annual Colin Baker Invitational held at Great Bridge High School December 28th and 29th.

 

COMMUNITY EVENTS  

Tidewater Sharks Winterfest Soccer Camp

Who: Soccer Tots, Ages 3-5 years
Future Stars, Ages 6-16 years
When: December 27-29
Times: Tots – 8 a.m.-9:30 a.m.
Future Stars – 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
Location: WISC Indoor Soccer Turf
Prices: Soccer Tots – $30
Future Stars – $75 (Price includes a camp shirt, group photo with coaches, certificate of completion and giveaways!)
Directors and Coaches: The Camp Director will be Martin Vickerton, Licensed Coach and former player with English Club Nottingham Forest and Longwood University. Throughout the camp appearances will be made by Sharks Coaches, as well as players from the WPSL and IPL teams.
What to Bring: Campers should bring shin guards, a water bottle, and indoor soccer shoes or tennis shoes. Future Stars campers should also bring a non-perishable lunch for the first two days. A pizza party will be held the last day.

Friday Night Futsal

Don’t miss Friday Night Futsal taking place every Friday from 6-9 p.m. at the WISC. Experienced soccer coaches will lead the players through futsal games and tournaments throughout the evenin.! In addition, all participants can play laser tag as part of the $10 fee. Parents can stay and watch or drop off your players and get a head start on Christmas shopping.

Sentara New Years 5K

Sentara will host a 5K on New Years Day (Tuesday, January 1) at 11 a.m. at the Sentara Careplex Fitness Center at Coliseum Central in Hampton.  The event is open to the public, with t-shirts, food and beverages provided to every recipient. Click here for more information and/or to sign up.
