YORK COUNTY — The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office will open its doors on Oct. 20 to hold a free community forum on the dangers of vaping.
Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling vapor, produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device. These devices heat a liquid, often containing nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals into an aerosol that users breathe in. While vaping is sometimes marketed as a safer alternative to traditional smoking, it still carries health risks. The vapor can contain harmful substances like heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, and ultrafine particles that can damage the lungs and cardiovascular system. Nicotine in e-cigarettes is also highly addictive and can affect brain development in teens and young adults.
According to the CDC, vaping and e-cigarettes are used more by youth than any other tobacco product. In 2024, those products were among the most commonly used tobacco products by middle and high school students. The CDC also says that 1.63 million students have admitted to using e-cigarettes.
During the forum, community members will hear from law enforcement leaders on the topic of vaping. The public will also be able to learn more about local vape shops, the dangers of vape usage, and its impact on adolescent development and the greater York County community.
Speakers scheduled for the evening are York-Poquoson Sheriff Ron Montgomery, District 4 Supervisor Stephen Roane and a representative from the Historic Triangle Drug Prevention Coalition.
The forum will take place at the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office on Oct. 20 from 6-7:30 p.m. Registration for the forum is free and can be found on the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office website.
