NEWPORT NEWS — Hampton Roads Academy’s upcoming theater showcase promises an unforgettable blend of creativity, courage, and compassion.
Scheduled Nov. 7–9, the event will feature a variety of performances across genres and tones, with the centerpiece being “The Anxiety Project,” a one-act musical performed by upper school students that explores the realities of mental health, self-harm, and substance abuse.
Though the subject matter is heavy, Director of Theater Kate Goddon and her students have approached it with care and thoughtfulness. From the start, the production team worked closely with families, school counselors, and outside organizations such as the Sarah Michelle Peterson Foundation, which provides mental health guidance and resources to students and educators.
“These students have been handling it so well,” said a school representative. “They’ve been supported by faculty, parents, and professionals throughout the process, and they’re excited to tackle these important issues.”

The production’s message, according to both cast and crew, centers on one key theme: no one is alone. The show aims to remind audiences that while everyone’s mental health journey is unique, shared understanding and empathy can help break the stigma surrounding these challenges.
In addition to “The Anxiety Project,” the showcase will feature lighter fare, including pre-show performances from the school’s Nowhere to Hide and more.
Because of the show’s mature themes, “The Anxiety Project” is recommended for audiences ages 13 and up. Tickets are set to go on sale Friday, Oct. 24, with performances running two weeks later.
The Hampton Roads Academy Theatre Department premiered its production of “The Anxiety Project” on Oct. 23 at the One Act Festival during the Virginia Theatre Association’s annual conference in Norfolk. The festival gave students a chance to build on last year’s top 10 finish and share an important message about mental health with judges and fellow high school performers.
“Schools are uniquely positioned to start meaningful conversations about real issues,” the representative added. “The arts give students a language to explore difficult subjects while also creating something beautiful.”
Tickets for the Showcase are on sale now at hra.ludus.com. Parental discretion is advised.
“The Anxiety Project: One Act Edition” is presented by special arrangement with Uproar Theatrics — UproarTheatrics.com.
