Local High School Artists Recognized for Creativity at Annual Show

WILLIAMSBURG — Local student artists from four area high schools received awards for their artwork from the Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center (WCAC) at its annual High School Student show.

The awards were presented at a special reception on Jan. 16.

“We were delighted with the quality of artwork submitted by students from the six participating high schools and it’s a pleasure to exhibit their inspired creations,” said Karen Schwartz, program chair. “We especially appreciate the efforts of our judge, Carol Gruppe, in selecting the winners and giving them feedback about why she chose their artwork.”

The top three awards went to Matthew Marcondes, first place, for “Veiled in Diversity;” Bryn Carlson, second place, for “Stress Relief;” and Evelynn Ritger, third place, for her body of work, “The Older I Get” and “Lipstick on a Pig.”  The Award of Distinction went to Addison Marie Leone for “Echeveria Showcase.”  All four attend Jamestown High School.

Merit awards went to Aliya Burton, Bruton High School; Zoe Cooper, Warhill High School; Lucas Crusenberry, Warhill High School; Kayla Diggs, Warhill High School; David Hanson, Bruton High School; Azriel Page-Wallace, Lafayette High School; and Spencer Rountree, Warhill High School.  

Honorable mentions went to Alkyone Aristidou, Lafayette High School; Trevor Buffington, Bruton High School; Amber Riese Carlson, Warhill High School; Emily Chapman, Lafayette High School; Sam Dickens, Warhill High School; Sara Iverson, Jamestown High School; Brendan Livingstone, Lafayette High School; Bryant Mashburn, Bruton High School; Victoria Merril, Jamestown High School; Elyse Moore, Bruton High School; Catherine Reid, Williamsburg Christian Academy; Paige Salehi, Lafayette High School; Kaci Wagner, Warhill High School; Hayden E. Walker, Lafayette High School; and Corey Wilkins, Bruton High School.

The High School Student Show, which runs through Feb. 14, features the work of students from Bruton, Jamestown, Lafayette and Warhill High Schools; Walsingham Academy, and Williamsburg Christian Academy.
