Bridge is a card game that builds skills in areas such as math, critical thinking, sportsmanship, competition, communication, socialization, and teamwork. Studies have shown that students who participate in bridge programs have a higher percentage of increased test scores on their standardized tests than those students who do not participate in bridge programs.
Bridge is currently taught at the following WJCC schools: Lafayette High, Matoaka Elementary, Laurel Lane (formerly Rawls Byrd) Elementary, James River Elementary, J.B. Blayton Elementary, Berkeley Middle School, Toano Middle School, and Hornsby Middle School.
If your student will be attending one of these schools in September and he or she would like to learn to play this card game while having fun and making new friends, have him or her listen for starting dates.
Some programs may start at the end of September while others may not start until the first or second week in October. Students do not need to have any skills (like those required for sports) in order to participate and learn the game.
Most students who participate will learn enough skills by the end of February 2018 to play in a local youth tournament at the end of February or early March 2018 and to attend the 2018 Youth North American Bridge Championships which will be held in Atlanta, GA at the end of July 2018.
