JAMES CITY COUNTY— Motor vehicle theft and vandalism are rising across the region, and James City County is experiencing the same troubling trend. These incidents are no longer limited to unlocked vehicles or cars with valuables in plain sight. Offenders are now going to greater lengths to gain entry, signaling a significant escalation in criminal behavior.
“‘Not in my neighborhood’ is simply not true,” said James City County Detective Jesse Harmon. “If you think it’s not your problem, think again. They’re not just tugging on door handles anymore – they’re breaking windows.”
Vehicle tampering, vandalism, and theft are often gateway crimes. “Stolen vehicles are frequently connected to more serious offenses,” Harmon said. “Things like identity theft, fraud, transportation of narcotics and weapons, even violent crime.”
Residents are urged to take steps to reduce their risk of victimization. Police recommend removing valuables from vehicles, locking all doors, ensuring windows are fully rolled up, and reviewing home security camera footage regularly. If a vehicle has an ignition-related recall, owners are encouraged to address it promptly. Police also suggest considering a small location-monitoring device placed inside the vehicle.
Community awareness and timely reporting are essential. “Don’t be an easy target,” Harmon said. “If you see something out of the ordinary or that strikes you as potentially suspicious, call 911. Sometimes the smallest bit of information can be the piece that solves the crime. You aren’t bothering us when you call — we are trained to quickly evaluate information and make sure it gets to the right place.”
Those involved in vehicle vandalism and theft may face criminal charges, which can carry lifelong consequences, including jail time and significant fines.
