Virginia’s 4 p.m. Burning Law in Effect Through April 30

The Virginia Burn Law is in effect till April 30. (James City County)

JAMES CITY COUNTY The James City County Fire Department is reminding residents that Virginia’s 4 p.m. burning law is now in effect and will remain in place through April 30.

The seasonal law is designed to reduce the risk of wildfires during one of the most dangerous times of the year.

Under the law, any legal burning in James City County must comply with several requirements. Burning is not permitted until after 4 p.m. Fires must be attended at all times and equipped with a means of control, such as a water hose, rake, shovel or fire extinguisher. No fuel may be added, and no fire may be started after midnight.

The law does not apply to barbecue grills or approved burn barrels when used for otherwise legal fires.
