YORK COUNTY — A man was fatally shot after a reported stabbing outside the Ross Dress for Less on Mooretown Road at the Williamsburg Marketcenter in York County Wednesday, according to the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office.
According to officials, York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the report of the stabbing at the store in the 6700 block of Mooretown Road in the Williamsburg area of York County Jan. 28 at approximately 3:25 p.m.
On arrival, deputies learned that a male suspect had reportedly stabbed a female just outside the store before fleeing to the nearby Home Depot, according to officials. James City County Police, who responded to the scene to provide mutual aid, found the suspect inside the Home Depot at the same time York-Poquoson deputies arrived, officials said.
James City County officers issued verbal commands, which the suspect did not follow, according to the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office. The suspect, who was armed, allegedly lunged at officers, at which point officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect, officials said.
Law enforcement personnel on scene immediately rendered aid, and the suspect was transported to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said.
The female victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to officials.
According to the sheriff’s office, the suspect, identified as a 33-year-old man from North Carolina, and the victim did not know each other.
The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office and James City County Police Department are working together on this incident, and the investigation is ongoing.
