JAMES CITY COUNTY — James City County announced police will conduct a Driving Under the Influence checkpoint this weekend.

The county said the checkpoint will be at a location in the county known for previous incidents of impaired driving beginning at 10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21 and continuing until 2 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22. According to the county, checkpoint locations are selected based on analysis of traffic data, crash patterns and past DUI-related enforcement.

The primary objective is not to make arrests, the county said, but to enhance public safety by discouraging impaired driving through visible enforcement and engagement.

During the operation, officers will briefly contact drivers to look for signs of alcohol or drug impairment and to verify drivers’ licenses as required, the county said, adding the checkpoint will be clearly marked with law enforcement vehicles, traffic cones, and warning signs to ensure motorist safety and compliance with state law.

The department reminds drivers that impairment can not only be a result of alcohol, but also marijuana, certain prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs. Those who plan to consume substances that could impair their ability to drive should plan to use a designated driver or a rideshare service.

DUI-related offenses can result in fines, court costs, license suspension and the potential for serious injury or loss of life, officials said, noting James City County Police are committed to protecting the public through education, high-visibility enforcement, and strategic prevention initiatives.
