Automated Speed Enforcement Camera 30-Day Warning Phase to Begin Monday in JCC School Zones

(James City County)

JAMES CITY COUNTY — The James City County Police Department announced the 30-day warning phase for its automated photo speed enforcement program in school zones will launch Monday, Sept. 8.

The program is launching at Stonehouse Elementary School, Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School, Toano Middle School, D.J. Montague Elementary School, James River Elementary School, Lafayette High School and Norge Elementary School zones.

Speed studies conducted in 2024 at the school zones identified a significant problem with speeding in this area, according to JCCPD, recording 37,892 violations in a five-day period across the school zones.

During the warning period, violators will receive a warning in the mail marked in red advising of the violation and the date and time. JCCPD said warning summonses serve as a reminder to slow down in places where children learn and play and will carry no monetary implications.

Live enforcement will begin on Oct. 8. From that point forward, motorists who exceed the posted school zone speed limit by 10-plus mph will receive a summons in the mail. These citations are civil in nature and carry a fine, but do not come with points against your license or insurance penalties, JCCPD said.

Photo speed cameras will be active and enforced on days that school is in session, children are present and when the school zone beacons are flashing, according to police. If traveling through the Stonehouse Elementary School, Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School, Toano Middle School, D.J. Montague Elementary School, James River Elementary School, Lafayette High School and Norge Elementary School zones during school hours, these cameras will be active.

“We are committed to changing driver behavior, slowing speeders down, and protecting our children. Please drive safely in our school zones and in our community. Working together, we can achieve our goal of ZERO. ‘Zero crashes, Zero injuries, and Zero endangered lives,” JCCPD said.
