
YORK COUNTY — The York County Department of Fire and Life Safety announced it responded to a hazardous materials incident at the Four Seasons apartment complex on Hampton Highway Saturday.
According to the department, at approximately 7:45 p.m. July 12, personnel from the York County Department of Fire and Life Safety responded to an emergency call reporting suspicious activity involving the dumping of unknown chemicals into a trash dumpster at the complex. Witnesses reported seeing an individual disposing of what appeared to be a liquid chemical substance into the dumpster, which callers said soon began emitting smoke.
Upon arrival, Fire and Life Safety said personnel secured the area and initiated a hazardous materials assessment. Just under five gallons of acid were located inside the dumpster. As a precaution, a nearby apartment building within the complex was temporarily evacuated.
A representative from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management Hazardous Materials Response Program was also on scene, assisting with monitoring the situation.
No injuries have been reported, and all residents were permitted to return to their homes.
