Dump Truck Wedged Under Overpass Closes I-64 Westbound Near Toano Exit

(Virginia State Police)

JAMES CITY COUNTY — Interstate 64 westbound lanes were closed Tuesday after a dump truck became stuck underneath an overpass, blocking all traffic near the Toano exit in James City County.

The Virginia State Police said the single-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m.

According to VSP, a preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the dump truck pulled out of the center median construction area with the cargo box in the upright position. The cargo box then made contact with the overpass, causing heavy damage to the dump truck and bending its axle.

The driver, 56-year-old Steven Waddell of Newport News, was hospitalized with minor injuries. Waddell has been charged with reckless driving.

The Virginia Department of Transportation put a detour in place, routing westbound traffic off of exit 227 onto Old Stage Road. Currently, VDOT is determining the extent of the damage to the bridge, and detours remain in place.
